A security guard has been sent for a medical check-up following an armed robbery in eastern Norway early this morning.

Up to four masked people in dark-coloured boiler suits held up the NOKAS armoured van near Skedsmokrorset in Akershus County at approximately 4am.

Threatening the guards with handguns, they then escaped in several cars. Nobody was hurt. NRK reports the shaken man asked to be examined by a doctor himself.

Armed officers from up to eight different districts and police helicopter crew are now hunting for the criminals, but nobody has been arrested so far.

Police believe the robbery was well planned, and it is unclear how much money was stolen.

Members of the public are asked to come forward with any information they may have.

NOKAS hit the headlines in 2004 after robbers armed with AG3s, MP5s, Kalashnikov automatic rifles, an M1 carbine and a .45 ACP pistol murdered one policeman in Stavanger during a shootout in the Cathedral square.

In what is thought to be the largest robbery in Norwegian history, they escaped with approximately 60 million kroner.
