Police Commissioner bows to Auditor General's criticism. Auditor General slates force’s continued ICT management inefficiency. A report by the Office of the Auditor General of Norway (RiksrevisjonenAG) has heavily criticised the Police Directorate for their consistently sub-standard ICT management (information and communication technology). “Several organisations have failed to establish satisfactory routines to ensure the safety of information. This applies to the directorate’s ICT management, amongst other things,” says the Auditor General, Jørgen Kosmo.

Failures

A report by the Office of the Auditor General of Norway (RiksrevisjonenAG) has heavily criticised the Police Directorate for their consistently sub-standard ICT management (information and communication technology).

“Several organisations have failed to establish satisfactory routines to ensure the safety of information. This applies to the directorate’s ICT management, amongst other things,” says the Auditor General, Jørgen Kosmo.

He goes on to warn that this means increased vulnerability, and a higher risk of abuse.

Weak

One of the points particularly highlighted in the report is the lack of a backup solution. This has been perceived as a weakness for the past three years.

“The Standing Committee on Scrutiny and Constitutional Affairs said it was surprised that work on a backup operations solution hasn’t received high priority,” the AG writes.

The assessment goes on to state a full solution is dependent upon renewing several police information systems. But more money is needed, and there’s no implementation timeframe.

The Office of the Auditor General has been critical to the Police Directorate’s ICT management over several years. We believe it to be serious that it’s still uncertain when a full backup operations solution will be in place.”

Grave

Ingelin Killengreen

Ingelin Killengreen, the National Police Commissioner, says the directorate takes the report’s findings extremely seriously, yielding to criticism.

“Our districts and special bodies haven’t done their job. I agree censure about the lack of ICT investment is grave, and to being reprimanded for not having made the necessary investments in previous budgets,” she tells VG.

Possible resignation

Killengreen defends what has happened, however. She says increased ICT funding would have affected district staffing, and can’t see how things could have been done differently.

She also takes responsibility for her decisions made during the course of ten years as national police commissioner.

“If I can’t live with them, I’ll resign,” says Killengreen, underlining she hasn’t considered it for now.
