For many years, it was only Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg needing permanent bodyguards, but security around other ministers has now been stepped up.

Ministers including Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Justice Minister Knut Storberget, and Defence Minister Grete Faremo are now under protection due to fears of attacks by Far Right extremists.

Tore Bjørgo, Oslo Police Academy researcher, believes that the bodyguards are essential. Speaking about Anders Behring Breivik’s attacks he said to NRK, “it is clear that this has set the alarm bells ringing, meaning you want to protect against this. Therefore, guards are a reasonable measure.”
