State strike averted

All-night talks give a result.

Today’s threatened major strike by unions with employees in the state sector has been called off.

An approximate 3.3 percent pay rise was agreed 11 hours past the strike deadline, with 300 million kroner allocated to bridge the salary gap between the sexes.

The package was accepted by both parties, even though unions originally demanded 4 percent.

But employers and unions in the municipal sector (kommune) have still to thrash out a deal. There could still be strikes in kindergartens, schools, and nursing homes from tomorrow if no agreement is reached today.

“The municipalities have been waiting for the state framework because local authorities need to know what they’re dealing with, roughly. But the pay gap between them and the state is already wide, which makes it demanding. There’s still a long way to go,” says Magnus Takvam, NRK’s political commentator.
