Statoil consultant took bribes for seven years / News / The Foreigner

The Foreigner Statoil consultant took bribes for seven years. A senior consultant working for Norway’s Statoil was dishonestly receiving money for seven years, a court has heard. “My client has, from the very beginning of the first police interrogation, admitted culpability for the points in the indictment. He is terribly sad, realizing that he has done something stupid and deeply and sincerely regrets it”, says lawyer Geir Jøsendal. The unnamed consultant at the centre of the case originally worked for Norsk Hydro. Between 2003 and 2010 he received about 7 million kroner in dishonest payments, creaming off 25% of the amount of each invoice between the pressure vessel company and Statoil. He is also accused of receiving 100,000 kroner after signing false invoices from another supplier.

Statoil consultant took bribes for seven years

The consultant was one of Statoil’s most trusted advisers until autumn last year and held purchasing responsibility for several large projects. In 2010, the company became suspicious and placed him under investigation. Police later raided 12 addresses in Stavanger and found evidence linking three people with the case. All of them were charged with gross corruption and money laundering offences. Gross corruption carries a sentence of up to 10 years in jail, whilst money laundering is punishable with up to 6 years imprisonment.

“[The consultant] has been cooperative and admitted the facts of the case. It has helped the investigation and will result in a sentence reduction to be decided by Stavanger District Court,” says District Attorney Marianne Djupesland at the Norwegian National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime (Økokrim).

She added, “This is a serious corruption case. It has been going on for a long time and involves large amounts. It was carried out in subtle ways, including by controlling the flow of money through multiple companies and using false invoices.”

The general manager of the pressure vessel company was one of two other defendants in the case. He has confessed his guilt to the charge of money laundering. Meanwhile, the third defendant, who is a subcontractor to the pressure vessel company, has not yet indicated how he will plead.

Økokrim says that it may yet have grounds to prosecute others in connection with the case.
