Swine flu continues to spread in Nord-Trøndelag. Food Safety Authority forced to rethink strategy. Three new pig herds have almost certainly been hit by the swine flu in Nord-Trøndelag, bringing the total to eight. The virus is transmitted more easily from humans to pigs than originally thought, and it now looks as though the authorities will have severe difficulty in preventing an outbreak.

Three new pig herds have almost certainly been hit by the swine flu in Nord-Trøndelag, bringing the total to eight.

The virus is transmitted more easily from humans to pigs than originally thought, and it now looks as though the authorities will have severe difficulty in preventing an outbreak.

Further culling of infected pigs has been ruled out, and exclusion zones are to remain in force.

The National Veterinary Institute says it is now considering setting up a screening programme for both farmers and pigs.

NRK reports today that farmers are terrified to go into their pigsties for fear of infecting their animals.

The farmers’ organisation Norsvin is now advising them to take extra precautions.
