The 53-year-old man had spent Christmas Eve in a bar with his son and was assaulted early the following morning whilst sitting in a baht bus (local cab), reports the Pattaya Daily News.

Describing himself as a local property magnate to police, the millionaire managed to escape after shouting for help, and fighting off his alleged kidnappers as they tried to push him into their blue Toyota.

Police reacted promptly by creating checkpoints to try to catch the men, who then crashed their car with false number plates into a bus after refusing to stop at one of them.

The five individuals, aged 35-44, ran away on foot, but were soon caught by police and taken to the station, where they were identified by the victim.

Following questioning, the men admitted wanting to kidnap the Norwegian millionaire. Thai police also found handcuffs, a knife and tape in the car.

Preliminary investigations have shown the five individuals have been in contact with the Norwegian’s former girlfriend via their mobile, but it is still unclear whether she is connected to the case.

The millionaire’s son alleges his father suffered minor injuries to his arm and leg after the kidnappers drove over him whilst escaping. His father has now been discharged from hospital, according to Dagbladet.
