Who’s coming this year?

On Monday 27 April, the ICMF will be launching this year’s programme. Here is a sneak-preview. No classical music festival would be complete without string quartets. This year, the Borodin quartet is scheduled to make their third appearance. Also appearing will be Stockholm Chamber Brass, the violinists Corey Cerovsek and Isabelle van Keulen, cellist Jan-Erik Gustafsson, clarinettist and conductor Charles Neidich, and the Concerto Italiano with the harpsichordist Rinaldo Alessandrini.

What is the ICMF?

In 1991, the cellist Truls Mørk and oboist Gregor Zubicky had their first performance of what was to become one of Stavanger’s success stories. The ICMF has been going from strength to strength ever since, attracting a myriad of leading musicians, and a generating a populous of loyal patrons. 1996 saw the festival become a member of the European Festivals Association, and 2009 will be the Grieg Trio’s fifth year of being its artistic directors.

Composers: past and present

The festival has had different composers in residence, with some of their works being performed. Past names include Witold Lutoslawski, George Crumb, Henry Dutilleux, and Krzysztof Penderecki.

The Musicians

Many of the world’s elite musicians have performed at the festival; many more than once. The list of names is too long to include here, so here are a few:

The pianists Martha Argerich and Stephen Kovacevich, the violinists Sergei Stadler and Leila Josefowicz, the singers Stephan Genz and Dietrich Henschel, the flautist Patrick Gallois, and the clarinettist Michael Collins.

Young talent

As well as welcoming returning artists, the festival serves as a launch pad for both Norwegian and international new artists. Since 1996, the International Summer Academy (ISA) has held master classes for them, plus allowing them to attend all of the concerts free of charge.

Much to look forward to.
