Truck association claims police discrimination. Norwegian truckers are up in arms following the news police allegedly halved another driver’s fine because he was Swedish. Ulf Anders Andersson was fined for bad brakes but refused to pay the 8000 kroner, prompting the Larvik police officer to write, “I have decided to halve it considering you are not a Norwegian citizen and your income level.” 61-year-old Mr Andersson works in Norway and receives a Norwegian-sized salary accordingly.

Communications Manager for the Norwegian Hauliers’ Association, Kari Brun Ågotnes, told VG that all drivers should be treated the same on Norwegian roads.

“We have discussed this internally within the association, and agree that this case is unacceptable. The driver has violated Norwegian law and should be punished accordingly, regardless of whether he is a Norwegian citizen or not,” she says.

Police Inspector, Magnar Pedersen from the Vestfold Police told VG it was unusual for police to reduce fines.

“We share the association’s feelings that Norwegian and foreign drivers should be treated equally. It’s important for reasons of traffic safety and competition. It was a one-off.”
