UK bookies predict record Munch price. Betting company Ladbrokes believes Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ will fetch considerably more than its USD 80 million reserve price at auction. Odds are 6/4 that the painting, due to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in New York on 02nd May, will break the USD 106 million record currently held by Picasso’s ‘Nude, Green Leaves and Bust’. Whilst ‘The Scream’ may be sold for sums of up to USD 150 million, the bookmakers also predicts a 3/1 chance bidding will rise towards USD 200 million.

"We're confident The Scream will break auction records when it goes under the hammer. Hopefully the artwork makes it to New York in one piece,” says Ladbroke’s Jessica Bridge in a press release, “We had to suspend betting as a number of large value bets were made."

The favoured location of the artwork’s new owner is Russia, at 5/2, and 3/1 it that it will be bought by an investor from Asia.

Labrokes latest betting shows prices (in USD) and odds are as follows:
0-50m 10/1
50-100m 2/1
100-150m 6/4
150-200m 3/1
200m+ 5/1

Buyer location:
Russia 5/2
Asia 3/1
Europe 3/1
US 4/1
South America 8/1
Australasia 16/1
Africa 20/1
Antarctica 1000/1

Blomqvist Kunsthandel in Oslo’s Knut Forsberg tells VG, “This just shows how famous and important the work is.”

The bookies are also quoting 21/1 that ‘The Scream’ will be stolen before bidding begins.
