Universities and schools experience rise in student cheats. Cheating at Norwegian university and school exams appears to be on the increase amongst students. Statistics gathered by NRK show the number of student cheats caught at 10 educational institutions has doubled or tripled in the last four years, only a few show a slight decline. One of the institutions, the University of Stavanger, was in the news recently after a supervisor found 30 clearly written pages of notes at the university’s toilets.

“These were related to an exam in a nearby location,” university senior legal advisor Dennis Aske told the broadcaster.

He says the university has strict policies about cheating, and “We inform studentsthat we scanexam papers to check for plagiarism and we have trained examguards in the most common cheating methods,” emphasising the consequences if they are found cheating in an exam.

“The examwill be voided if it has already been submitted for marking. In addition, the student is banned from the University of Stavanger, and barred from sitting examinations at other universities and colleges for a period of up to one year.”

On one occasion, some students tipped Mr Aske off about three others, although all those NRK spoke to deny any wrongdoing themselves.

“I once receivedthe name of three students who wentaround bragging that they got good grades dishonestly. I passed their names on to exam officers put these under extra scrutiny. Two ofthem were caught,” he says.

‘It was not me’

However, few are caught, according to Mr Aske.

“Universitystudents cheat at home exams as well as those on the university’s premises.”

Clamping down on cheats is also getting increasingly difficult. Most 6th-Form college coursework and tests are submitted electronically, and are easily plagiarised, according to a report by Aftenposten.

“I have cheated at tests and submissions, all helped by technology,” said ‘Thomas’, an individual who wished to remain anonymous.

“Moreover, at secondary school, we found out the tests they gave us were last year’s, and we found the tasks published on the Directorate for Education and Training’s website,” he continued, admitting downloading all of Wikipedia to his PC, which are allowed as exam aids for certain subjects, though without Internet access.

Department Director Siv Lindstrøm says, “Downloading this is quite a job,” pointing out current exams are not just about repeating facts, however, but about discussing issues and demonstrating advanced skills.
