A Norwegian man and his Filipino fiancée charged with allegedly kidnapping and murdering 6-year-old Ellah Joy Pique deny their involvement.

49-year-old Sven-Erik Berger and fiancée Karen Castro Esdrelon (24), who are still in police custody, claim they have a strong alibi showing they could not have committed the crimes.

Local police believe the couple, who witnesses claim were a white man and a Filipino woman driving a black SUV, abducted the little girl last Tuesday outside her school in the village of Minglanilla, approximately 15 kilometres south of Cebu City.

They were arrested four days later at Mactan-Cebu international airport after her body was found below a cliff in the town of Barili the following morning.

VG alleges evidence it has seen shows three witnesses, all schoolchildren, have identified the couple as Ellah’s kidnappers.

“There were many people in the police station at the airport. The [10-year-old] boy pointed to a woman and a foreign man sitting at a table, and identified them as the two who kidnapped Ellah Joy outside the school," the police report reads.

The two others confirmed this when they visited the police station the following day.

Nevertheless, the couple claims police have mistaken them for others and manipulated the three children. Provincial Police Chief Erson Digal refutes this, however.

“We have witnesses who have identified them, and this is what counts,” he says.

Mr Berger and Ms Esdreldon now have seven days to prove their innocence.

“I have a plane ticket home to Norway on 22 February but doubt I will be on that flight. We are now branded as child murderers, and the only positive thing is that we are still allowed to sleep in the police station at night,” he tells Aftenposten.
