Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Terminator” films moved one step closer to becoming reality this week, with a demonstration of the capabilities of next generation technology.

The unmanned four-wheeled robot, called the “Precision Urban Hopper”, is designed to navigate autonomously using GPS, and to jump onto or over obstacles of more than 25 feet using a specially designed leg, according to Sandia National Laboratories.

Researchers say that the robot has several advantages. It can help reduce troop casualties, deploy weapons with precision, and could be used by police as a surveillance aid, or by search and rescue units in difficult terrain.

The development programme is funded by the U.S. military’s research arm, DARPA, with testing and delivery planned for late 2010.
