Vågå mayor found guilty, acquitted of most serious charge / News / The Foreigner

Vågå mayor found guilty, acquitted of most serious charge. The ongoing trial of the Vågå mayor Rune Øygard came to an end today, Wednesday. Court of Appeal judges found him guilty of sexual conduct with a girl under 16, but freed him from charges of sex with the girl when she was under 14 years of age. The latter charge holds a higher jail term, and was hence considered as a minor victory for the charged mayor, VG commentators claimed. Labour Party (Ap) mayor Mr Øygard was charged for having sexual intercourse with the victim some fifty times, but has constantly maintained he is innocent. Many came out in support of him during the initial trial.

The case has shocked the small community of Vågå, where the sentenced mayor has been a very popular figure.

54-year-old Mr. Øygard was handed a four-year jail term then and ordered to pay the victim NOK 150,000 in damages.

Today, members of a Facebook support group established for the girl, now 17, handed her flowers as she was leaving court.

Talking to VG, law professor Jo Martin Stigen said that the mayor could expect a lower sentence, but declined to speculate on the outcome.

Proceedings regarding his sentence will start tomorrow, Thursday.
