Popularity regarding William as a first name hovered around the 0.2 per cent mark between 1880 and 1995. It has risen sharply since then to last year’s 1.6 per cent.

William is an English variation of the German name Wilhelm, a combination of ‘will’ and ‘helmet’, according to the SSB.

From 1880 to 1995, popularity regarding Nora as a first name has been between roughly 0.1 and 0.3 per cent. It began its sharp climb around 1995, ending 2016 at about 1.8 per cent.

William and Nora (spelt Noora as a Finnish variation) are also names of two characters appearing in the internationally-popular Norwegian TV series called Skam (external link, in Norwegian only, which is aired on NRK in Norway.

It covers the story, everyday life, scandals, and troubles of pupils and young teenagers at Oslo’s Hartvig Nissen Upper Secondary School.

Jørgen Ouren, senior researcher at Statistics Norway, says he does not wish to speculate about whether there is a link between name choice and the series.

“But it doesn’t seem too far-fetched to suggest that the popularity of the TV series has something to do with it,” he says.

The school had to close to visitors for a while because it was so popular amongst Danish fans, who hoped to meet the stars.

Nevertheless, Visit Oslo has now developed a Skam map. This allows fans to visit the locations in Oslo that are seen in the series, now in its third season.

People going to see the school or apartment buildings are asked to kindly show respect, however.

“You cannot enter private property without permission, but you can see the buildings from the street,” Visit Oslo employees write.
