Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has appointed the Druze professor to replace Michael Eligal. George Deek, a Christian-Arab diplomat, is his deputy.

The move, to improve Norwegians’ impression of Israel, comes following results of a poll conducted on behalf of Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

It shows the majority of Norwegians consider Israelis to be racist, aggressive, extreme in their views and anti-peace, according to newspaper Yediot Ahronoth,

62-year-old Naim Araidi is a Hebrew literature professor who has published many books including collections of poetry. He also presents a weekly children’s television programme.

“It would be a great privilege for me to represent Israel and show its beautiful side, as well as the coexistence that despite all the hardships can only be maintained in a true democracy,” he is reported as saying.
