The Norwegian journalist Pål Refsdal and his Afghan interpreter were freed today after having been held in captivity since 05 November by a group believed to have connections with the Taliban.
Their kidnapping near the border with Pakistan, and ongoing round-the-clock negotiations, were kept under wraps for fear that the two would be sold on to others.
The journalist was taken into captivity because he failed to ask permission to enter territory controlled by the local Taliban and was suspected of being a spy, according to NTB.
NRK reports that the leader of the kidnappers in Kabul who calls himself Dawran claims that Refsdal was only released after he’d converted to Islam.
