UPDATED: Anders Behring Breivik had been shooting for one-and-a-half hours on Utøya before police arrived it is confirmed today.

At the press conference, police also verify Mr Breivik, who was unknown to them before yesterday’s tragedy, confirms he was on the island and fired shots and gave himself up voluntarily when they commanded him to stop. He had one handheld and one automatic weapon.

A 22-year-old, who was one of the intended victims, tells NRK he only survived because the gunman missed.

“He tried to shoot me with a handheld weapon. I saw the bullet from the gun fly past me and hit the stones behind me. I just ran. People beside me were simply gunned down. He made sure he shot everyone twice,” says the man.

92 people, several of them teenagers, have now been confirmed dead following the double massacres in Oslo at Labour’s (Ap) summer youth camp. Five more are also feared killed.

It is believed there are still dead bodies amongst the ruins at Utøya and a search is still being conducted in waters around the island. There is still no confirmation if Mr Breivik was acting alone.

In response to questions whether there were any other weapons found, and if there was security on guard at the venue, Oslo’s Assistant Chief of Police Sveinung Sponheim answered, “This has not been established yet.”

As to the bomb, the accused also owns a plant cultivation company in 2009, Geofarm, through which he bought six tones of fertiliser this year from Rena’s Felleskjøpet in Åmot municipality, Hedmark. Fertiliser is a known ingredient in homemade bombs, and has been used in several major terrorist attacks worldwide.

Police now confirm the explosive device was in a delivery van parked outside government headquarters. Today is an official day of mourning.
