Police say they will be questioning a former altar boy tomorrow, who alleges he was abused by now disgraced Bishop Georg Müller.

Confronted

Müller, the former Catholic Bishop-prelate of Trondheim, resigned last summer after confessing to having sexually molested an underage boy, who is now in his ‘30s, whilst he served as a priest at the Church 20 years ago.

His resignation comes as a result of having been confronted by accusations last year about what he did, after an unnamed woman had reported him to the police at the end of 2009 following reports she’d heard about the boy having been sexually abused.

“I sent police a three-page letter. I wanted to tell them about the rumours, but hoped they weren’t true,” she told Adressavisen today.

The news of what Müller had done hit the Church hard last summer, but was only revealed yesterday on the victim’s wishes by the Vatican’s prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal William Levada.

Shame

The paper believes the victim was paid between 400,000 and 500,000 kroner compensation. Bernt Eidsvig – Bishop for Trondheim and Oslo – expressed his profound ignominy over the matter, and says his thoughts are with him.

“I am, on a personal note, struggling to find the necessary words at this time. First and foremost I wish to express my sympathies with the victim, and I hope and pray that his wishes for anonymity are respected. The burden he carries is demanding enough. The matter has been dealt with according to the guidelines of the Church, and the needs and wishes of the victim has been met and respected as best as possible.

“Following in from this I would like to express my shame on behalf of the Church and emphasise that Müller has acted contrary to all the regulations that he is subject to and the vows that he has made,”, Eidsvig wrote in a statement issued yesterday on behalf of the Territorial Prelature of Trondheim.

Eidsvig says he also believes the Catholic Church attracts paedophiles because they search for places where they can be in contact with children and adolescents.

Earlier today, Trondheim’s Catholic congregation gathered to pray for all those involved in the scandal.
