The one metre Philippine crocodile climbed over the fence around its cage at Akvariet, one of Bergen’s main tourist attractions.

17 children from a local kindergarten were on a visit when it suddenly appeared, scurrying between the legs of several children and terrified employees. The species is classified as “quite dangerous.”

“I was concerned about saving the children...luckily, it didn’t snap at anybody” Jan Blom-Pettersen, the kindergarten’s educational leader told Bergens Tidende (bt.no).

According to Blom-Pettersen, one of the children started crying, but most took the incident calmly, and found it quite exciting.

The attraction’s director managed to catch the crocodile himself by throwing a wet towel over its head.

He has since apologised, and assured the public that improved security measures are now being taken to ensure that such a thing won’t happen again.

The incident happened at approximately 10 o’clock yesterday morning.
