The joint eastern Norway Ås-based University of Life Sciences and Larvik-located Thor Heyerdahl Insitute academic post involves contributing to developing multi-discipline theories and methods where scientific areas the environment, development, and health meet.

Established in 2008, the four-year tenure may soon become academic itself in the abscence of any new financial allocations, however.

"He [Heyerdahl] made an observation, became fascinated by it and drew a conclusion almost there and then, while he began to look for evidence that the observation was correct," current post-holder Professor Willy Østreng told Aftenposten about the legendary man, considered controversial by the academic milieu.

"Usually, you make an observation and have a hypothesis, and you search for things to confirm or disprove this afterwards," he added.

Film 'Kon-Tiki' is currently under consideration for an Oscar.
