Sjursøya train disaster interim report ready.

The Norwegian Accident Investigation Board (Statens Havarikommisjon) has concluded human error was the main cause of the fatal train crash at Sjursøya.

On 24 March, 16 goods cars left the Alnabru loading/unloading terminal and travelled uncontrollably at speeds of up to 100 km/h along eight kilometers of track, killing three people, before ending up in the fjord.

A misunderstanding between the train dispatcher at Alnabru and the shift leader caused the goods train to start rolling.

Deficiencies in safety management procedures at the freight terminal such as failing to follow up rules and procedures were also blamed, according to Dagbladet.

“There wasn’t one mistake, or one reason, but an interaction between several causes,” says the board’s director, Grete Myhre.
