Authorities are alerting residents of Bergen and surrounding areas to expect rising waters this week.

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) warns of downpours between today and tomorrow caused by snow and glacier melting.

Together with yesterday’s rain, officials forecast areas north of Boknafjorden in Rogaland up the coast to Sunnmøre in Møre and Romsdal will experience levels higher than floods occurring once every five years.

According to Aftenposten, the amount of water falling over 1,000 square metres the amount of water will equal to 1,200 garden sprinklers turned on full for one hour.

“We do not think the situation will be extremely dramatic, but people living in local areas will have to prepare themselves for a lot of water,” on-duty hydrologist at NVE, Thomas Skaugen, tells Aftenposten.

However, people are still advised to take care, as NVE officials warn “Heavy precipitation will increase the risk of slides, especially in areas with steep slopes and along streams and rivers with high water flow.”
