Halvorsen optimistic about Lofoten / News / The Foreigner

Halvorsen optimistic about Lofoten. Yesterday’s Ministry of Petroleum and Energy’s 21st licensing round for oil blocks in the Norwegian and Barents Sea was good news for the environmentally-friendly Socialist Left Party (SV). A total of 94 were put out, but the four lying near Lofoten and Vesterålen in the Norwegian Sea were held back. FrP’s (Progress Party) petroleum and energy political spokesperson Kjetil Solvik Olsen characterised this round’s announcement as a “pat on the shoulder for SV”, according to NTB. Labour (Ap) have already signaled they may be willing to concede to SV’s demands about shielding the Lofoten area from oil drilling. This was primarily to ease tensions amongst the Parties in red-green coalition government Parties, which SV is part of.

“It’s important for SV there’s now a common understanding about the uniqueness of the blocks that were lying entirely below Vestfjorden. This is an admission that strengthens our argument about protecting Nordland 6 and 7, as well as Troms 2,” says the Party’s environmental political spokesperson, Snorre Valen.

Deepwater

Party-leader Kristin Halvorsen says holding the blocks back is a good argument against building these areas out. She believes it now strengthens the possibility these areas will be preserved.

“I think the accident in the Gulf of Mexico has led to these four being held back, as we wouldn’t otherwise have seen its impact on the entire oil business and the surrounding areas,” she says.

Sp’s (Centre Party) Petroleum and Energy Minister Terje Riis-Johansen confirms the Deepwater Horizon disaster has played a part even though some of the blocks are deeper than before, according to a Ministry spokesperson.

“We’re holding off on the blocks that are closest to land so we can assess the risk,” said Riis-Johansen at yesterday’s press conference, adding that “the 21st Licensing round will be concluded in light of what we are now experiencing in the Gulf of Mexico. Before awarding licenses in the 21st licensing round, I will ensure I have deeper knowledge about the accident.”

The application deadline for the concession is 03 November, and a decision will be taken in the spring of next year.
