A routine taxi flight by Midtnorsk Helikopterservice went horribly wrong earlier today, after a Robinson R-44 Astro helicopter with four people on board crashed into the sea near 150 metres from land near Fyllinga, outside Horten.

“Two helicopters were flying in formation when one of them crashed and went through the ice,” Owe Frøland, rescue leader at Hovedredningssentralen Sør-Norge tells NTB.

Although divers from the Drammen Fire Brigade and a mini-sub fro Kongsberg are at the scene, emergency services report conditions in the area as being extremely difficult.

Wreckage is strewn across the ice, and there are no reports of survivors so far.

“There’s continuous ice from Horten to Moss. The water is completely calm, but it’s very foggy, and the ice is moving inland all the time,” Trond Syversen, technical manager for the Bastø Fosen ferry company, assisting in the search, tells VG Nett.

Vestfold police have set up an emergency telephone number for concerned friends and relatives: 33 34 44 00.

The Norwegian Accident Investigation Board say there have been three accidents involving this type of helicopter since 2001.
