1st place goes to the Solstrand Hotel & Bad in western Norway’s Os municipality, Hordaland County, which dates from 1896.

Located by the Bjørnafjord some 30 kilometres south of Bergen in Osøyro, the hotel offers spa and wellness facilities, personnel say.

“The food we serve is very linked to our location by the fjord so we serve a lot of fish and shellfish, as well as meats such as cured ham, lamb, and venison,” general manager Pernille Schau-Larsen tells The Foreigner.

“Having an international clientele staying with us also means we’re focused on quality and go elsewhere if the standard of ingredients our local suppliers deliver is not acceptable. We have sometimes used lamb from New Zealand, for example,” adds Ms Schau-Larsen.

Staying in one of the 135 rooms gives access to an indoor, outdoor, and therapy pool, a fitness room, several saunas, and a large garden.

Accommodation standards are junior suites, deluxe rooms, executive, or standard rooms – including family ones.

The type of fjord view depends on the standard, and the first three room categories have either a balcony or terrace.

Activities include helicopter rides, golf, hiking, and access to sea kayaks and wooden rowing boats.

Some of the sightseeing possibilities include Troldhaugen outside Bergen, where Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) lived for 22 years, the unique Baronial Manor in Rosendal, built in 1665, or the Folgefonna Glacier – Norway’s third-largest one.

The next four places on TripAdvisor’s list have three hotels in central to eastern parts. Hotel number five is located in the town of Ålesund in western Norway’s Møre og Romsdal County – a complete list is given at the end of the article.

The Clarion Collection Hotel Bryggen in Ålesund is located by the sea. Built in 1918 originally as a warehouse, the modern, renovated building is situated in the centre of this fishing village’s historical part.

The hotel has 85 rooms – standard, superior, suite, and family – and some allow fishing from the room’s window. More adventurous guests wishing to swim can request a room allowing them to jump straight out of the window into the water.

“It’s more-or-less the same temperature all year round,” hotel personnel say.

Activities include a trip to the top of Akslafjell, a mountain 189 metres above sea level at its highest point (some 620 feet) which offers views over Ålesund and the surrounding islands.

Otherwise, the city offers the Atlantic Sea Park Aquarium (Atlanterhavsparken) and historic buildings constructed in so-termed Jugendstil (Art Nouveau, most popular between 1890 and 1910).

Clarion Collection is part of the Nordic Choice Hotel chain, which has recently entered a direct booking arrangement with TripAdvisor.

Fruits and fjords

Hotel Ullensvang in Hordaland County’s village of Lofthus, Ullensvang municipality, is situated by the fjord in the Hardanger region. TripAdvisor ranks this facility 9th.

Hardanger is a picturesque area famous for its fruit trees and bushes, as well as the eight or nine-stringed traditional bowed instrument called Hardingfela(The Hardanger Fiddle), amongst other things.

The hotel was established by Hans Utne, who was just 14 years of age when he rowed across the Hardangerfjord from Utne.

According to the hotel’s website, the young man soon bought a piece of land on the banks of the fjord, building himself his lodgings in a form of a boathouse. It contained his straw bed in the loft, with the shipping office below.

The hotel’s foundations were laid in 1846 when he was 18, and is still run by Utne family descendants some 169 years later.

There are 168 rooms, including 17 deluxe rooms and 9 junior suites, all rooms with either a mountain or fjord view.

One activity available to guests are a 19.5-kilometre hike (about 12 miles) of between 4 and 6 hours on Dronningstien.

Officially opened by HRH Queen Sonja of Norway in 2013, the path also features 600 steps allegedly made by monks in the 1200s (Munketrappene). This ascends to 1,100 metres above sea level (some 3,610 feet) and offers a trip past fruit gardens down towards the fjord.

Trolltunga (Troll’s Tongue) is some 30 minutes by car from the hotel. It offers views over the lake called Ringedalsvatnet and glimpses of the Folgefonna Glacier.
