Every year, 55,000 cycles are stolen in Norway. According to E24.no, the first half of 2009 has seen a rise of 11 percent in comparison to last year. 4,395 cycles were reported stolen in the 10 largest police districts in Norway.

But even though Oslo has seen a rise of 17.2 percent on last year, Tromsø and Bergen have had the largest increase, with a jump of 75 and 48 percent, respectively.

Ingrid Hom Svendsen, public relations manager in Tryggvesta, gives one possible reason for the higher figures.

“In the last few years, we have seen a decline in the number of cycle thefts, and this can have made many cyclists less cautious. At the same time, there are a growing number of more expensive bikes on the roads,” she tells the paper.

It is expected that more than 14,000 thefts will be reported for this year, should this trend continue.
