‘I became panic-stricken’, says Utøya ferry captain / News / The Foreigner

‘I became panic-stricken’, says Utøya ferry captain. The captain of the MS Thorbjørn ferry that transported Anders Behring Breivik to Utøya Island described how he helped him as he thought Breivik was a police officer. 48-year-old Jon Olson told Oslo District Court, Thursday, that Breivik was wearing a uniform and showed fake identification papers to a security guard at the dock, who then summoned the ferry. The security guard Simen Braeden Mortensen also testified in court. "He [Breivik] had a certain authority when he arrived in a police officer's uniform. I thought the police identification was legitimate," he stated.

After Breivik got onboard, the captain Jon Olson asked him to cover his gun so as not to upset people on the island, he recalled. Olson’s partner, Monica Bøsei, was also aboard.

"I think Monica said something, or I did, about how he could cover his rifle, because the mood at Utøya was a bit tense," he said.

Breivik then covered the gun in a plastic bag, saying he was just there to protect the camp after a terrorist attack on Oslo hours earlier.

Olson went on to say that he helped Breivik carry a case full of weapons, onto the island. Moments later, Breivik unwrapped his gun and shot Olson's girlfriend and the police officer, Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s stepbrother, who had been deputed on the island.

"I saw that he shot Trond Berntsen from behind and I saw Trond fall down. I don't remember if I could see him shoot Monica or not," he said, reporting that the shock of the incident had erased most of his memories of the day.

Olsen said he fled into the woods after the first few shots were fired. His daughter was also on the island on that day.
The ferry captain spoke of his feelings of "angst and complete panic" as he tried to contact police when the shooting began.

"I thought that the sky would soon be filled with helicopters and the fjord full of boats."

Professor Torleiv Ole Rognum from the Institute of Public Health will be giving evidence about the first nine victims' autopsy reports today.

The deceased are:

51-year-old Trond Berntsen (police officer)
45-year-old Monica Elisabeth Bøsei (Olson's partner)
43-year-old Rune Havdal (Utøya security guard)
43-year-old Hanne Annette Balch Fjalestad (Norwegian Peoples Aid first aid assistant)
30-year-old Snorre Haller (Norwegian United Federation of Trade Unions' youth candidate)
25-year-old Rolf Christopher Johansen Perreau (Labour Youth movement (AUF) Trondheim
17-year-old Lejla Selaci (AUF Fredrikstad)
16-year-old Steinar Jessen (AUF Alta)
15-year-old Birgitte Smetbak (AUF Nøtterøy)
