Ms Pelosi is a strong supporter of the Chinese dissident and author, and has consistently demanded his release since delivering her protest to Chinese authorities when Mr Xiaobo was jailed in 2009.

NRK reports head of Amnesty International Salil Shettyi and John Ralston Saul, head writers’ organisation International PEN are amongst the other names attending the ceremony.

Both are on a wish list received by the institute from Beijing and circles close to Mr Xiaobo, one of the founders of Chinese PEN, a couple of weeks ago.

Several of China’s most prominent exiled Chinese dissidents are also coming, including other former Tiananmen Square demonstrators Wang Dan, and Bo Fu, as well as leading intellectuals Harry Wu and Fang Li-Zhi.

The Institute says several other invited guests, including those not on Mr Xiaobo’s list, will probably be answering by the middle of next week.

“These are Chinese who have contacted us themselves and told us of their affiliation to Liu Xiaobo, either by being co-signatories of Charter 08, those he signed on behalf of, or who have a more personal connection,” says institute Director Geir Lundestad.
