The minister remarked about US Opposition politicians’ threatened blocking of President Obama’s proactive climate policy prior to the start of the COP17/CMP7 UN Climate Summit in Durban today. He alleged, “The Republicans are root of the problem.”

“It's actually completely unbelievable. To think that there are Presidential candidates that completely disregard the research in scientific superpower the United States, the country that has fostered the most Nobel Prize winners over the years by far.  The same people listen to science in all other areas, but climate it doesn’t apply to climate research. We are now also seeing that the Obama administration is afraid to raisethe climate issue before next year’s Presidential election for fear of losing votes,” said minister Solheim to Aftenposten

Norway will be one of 192 countries in the next two weeks trying to get environment negotiations back on track. Nations, ministers, and environmental authorities are split over the controversial Kyoto Protocol that expires next year. Some argue any potential new deal must be agreed in the next five years for any action to take place from 2020.

The protocol has not been ratified by the United States, however, and Russia, Canada and Japan said they will not cooperate if none of the major countries agrees to an extention.

However, minister Solheim admits Norway has problems. He finds it embarrassing that the country has not reduced its greenhouse gases emissions and urges Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg to have a similar vision.

“It will be bad if Norway, the world's richest country, says that we cannot afford to cut our emissions, at the same time our British, Finnish and French friends can. It will put Norway in a whole new league, the Saudi League,” he said.

Minister Solheim and the Prime Minister will be attending the summit’s high-level talks next week.
