Oil-rich Norway came in 14th place in the Charities Aid Foundation’s (CAF) World Giving Index 2016. CAF used several sub-categories to arrive at the various countries’ marks: world giving index score. For Norway, these were 50, 52, 67, and 31%, respectively.

The nation’s ranking also improved compared to that obtained in the previous survey.

“Norway appears in the Top 10 for donating money for the first time this year with a score of 67%, a seven percentage point increase on last year,” says CAF says.

The organisation also remarked about altruistic Norway’s sub-category marks.

“However in other areas such as the average of people participating in helping a stranger Norway scored a middle-ground 52%. In the volunteer work category asking what is the average volunteering time Norway scored a further lower 31%.”

Iceland, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden were ranked 17th, 20th, 24th, and 25th, respectively. These four other Nordic Countries’ sub-category scores were:

  • Iceland: 49% (world giving index score), 52% (helping a stranger average) 70% (donating money average), and 26% (volunteering time average)
  • Denmark: 47%, 54%, 62%, and 23%
  • Finland: 46%, 55%, 50%, and 31%
  • Sweden: 45%, 59%, 61%, and 15%

Thus, in comparison to Norway:

  • Icelanders got a slightly lower world giving index score, were just as helpful to a stranger, were more willing to donate money, but less willing to volunteer
  • Danes were given a lower world giving index score, were more helpful to a stranger, and less willing to both donate money and volunteer
  • Finns got a lower world giving index score, were more helpful to a stranger, less willing to donate money, and just as happy to volunteer
  • Swedes got a lower world giving index score, were more willing to help a stranger, but not as keen to either donate money or volunteer

The inquiry’s top five countries were Myanmar (1st (formerly known as Burma)), the US (2nd), Australia (3rd), New Zealand (4th), and Sri Lanka (5th).

140 countries were surveyed, with the last five places going to Serbia (135th), DRC (136th), Greece (137th), Yemen (138th), Palestinian Territories (139th), and China (140th).
