Norwegians ate less seafood in 2016 than the previous year, new figures show. Salmon sales in Europe are also lower.

Fish-eating declined from 90,296 tons to 84,006 tons year-on-year (a seven per cent decrease). This continues a downward trend, which started some four years ago.

“Consumption of seafood in households whose people are below 34 years of age has declined by 46 per cent since 2012,” said Renate Larsen, director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, in a statement.

The biggest decline was in the number of fresh fillets eaten – at 23 per cent. Consumption of fresh natural seafood was down by 19 per cent.

According to Ms Larsen, the reason for the decline is unclear, with cost being just one factor. Consumption of natural frozen seafood rose by two per cent.

“Young consumers are concerned about what food costs. Higher prices explain some of the decline, but price alone cannot explain the major changes we see in 2016. Last year, the price of Norwegian seafood rose by three per cent, while the price of fresh salmon fillets rose by 11 per cent,” she comments.

January 2017 saw a mixed situation for fish sent from Norway. The value of the 170,000 tonnes exported was NOK 7.6bn (some EUR 858.94m at today’s ROE).

This was a net increase of NOK 891m (roughly EUR 100.72k) – or 13 per cent – compared with January 2016. However, the decrease by volume was 11 per cent.

70,100 tonnes of salmon worth NOK 5.3bn (some EUR 599m) was exported last month, but this was a reduction of 5,400 tonnes to the EU. The total decline in volume across all markets was 2,700 tonnes.

“The start of the 2017 seafood year has been marked by a reduced supply of salmon from Norway and continuing high prices,” said Seafood Council Communications Director Geir Håvard Hanssen.

Based in Tromsø, the Norwegian Seafood Council is financed by the seafood industry and has twelve representatives in Norwegian seafood markets. It is owned by the Ministry of Fisheries.
