Saying it “was good to be back on old turf, meeting Norwegian-Americans, amongst others”, HRH and HRH Queen Sonja then met more of an official committee, including former Vice-President Walter Mondale, Governor of Minnesota Mark Dayton and the St.Paul Mayor, Chris Coleman.

King Harald also told the Norwegian media that the main reason for visiting the United States is to remember the time he spent there during WWII. According to the paper, HRH is probably the first monarch-ever who spent part of his childhood at the White House, together with his mother and his sisters.

On Thursday, TRH will begin the official program with a visit to Decorah, Iowa, to Luther College, and the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum.

Other programme highlights include visits to Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic, world-famous for its cancer treatment, Duluth’s Norway Hall, and the “Luminous Modernism: Scandinavian Art Comes to America, 1912"  art exhibition at Scandinavia House in New York.

TRHs will end their stay with a visit to Ground Zero and the American-Scandinavian Foundation’s centennial anniversary celebration.
