The manor house in Telemark County is notoriously haunted by a ghost known as Den grå dame (The Grey Lady) who wanders the corridors.

“This is probably the most famous ghost story in Telemark. And that's precisely why we at NRK would like to look into this,” said NRK Telemark’s Eirik Haugen to his employer.

Den grå dame’s identity has not been confirmed, although the story is connected to Prince Christian Frederik of Denmark-Norway, who visited Niels Aall at Søndre Brekke gård. She reputedly died during a large party held on the estate in 1813 for the Prince.

“People have seen her, seen her shadow, and seen her in the mirrors. Some have felt a cold draft, and some have also noted that certain unexplained things have happened,” says Telemark Museum’s Christine Hermansen.

The ghost has shown herself at Brekke on some occasions. According to the museum, a railway employee once met a lady dressed in old-fashioned clothes on the first floor stairs of the main building. He tried to talk to her, but she just walked right past.

Another story allegedly occurred on the pavement outside Brekkeparken. A man is said to have experienced that she passed through his bicycle as she was walking.

Other occurrences include doors being closed, chairs moved, footsteps, and an invisible hand that held a man before a tree toppled to the ground in front of him.

The NRK team will begin their live transmission from the building at 10 pm local time. The event will include a viewing of the property and storytelling...before they go to bed in the haunted house.

Three to five night cameras will monitor the house, and the entire session will be viewable directly on the broadcaster’s Telemark website.

Members of the public are invited to interact during the transmission via social media website Twitter using (#nrkspøkelse).

“Horses for courses. I almost don’t dare to be alone in this house during the daytime,” said Kristin Berge, Telemark Museum’s information manager.

Other alleged connections to the ghost named Den grå dame in Norway include Dr. Holms' hotel in the southern part of the country's Geilo, Herregården in Vestfold County's Larvik, and Dalen Hotel in southern Norway's Telemark County.

Some of claimed sightings/hauntings abroad are:

  • Bishops Stortford (Hertfordshire), Rutford Old Hall (Lancashire) - both in England
  • Denbigh Castle, Denbighshire, Wales
  • Glamis Castle, Angus, Scotland
  • Willard Library, Evans, Indiana, US
  • Cumberland College, Dunedin, New Zealand.

And as well as being a character in British-born author J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series, The Grey Lady was a character in the film Ghostbusters and Hallmark made-for-TV film The Good Witch (source: Wikipedia).
