A threatened strike by 1,600 members of the Norwegian Union of Journalists (Norsk Journalistlag/NJ) in NRK has been called off.

The agreement, reached eight hours past the negotiations deadline, means an average increase of 13,852 kroner per person, including pay supplements.

“The increase for working unsociable hours is an important victory for us. It’s demanding being at work whilst the rest of the family is off, and it’s difficult to make the logistics work when you can’t collect or deliver your children from/to kindergarten,” says the NJ’s Hege Iren Frantzen, who headed the negotiations.

The increase also includes a rise in the daily amount of danger money, which has remained the same since 1996.

“It’s a supplement paid to those of our colleagues who risk their lives to work for NRK. We’re completely dependent on our members wanting to travel to war areas and report back home,” she says.

NRK’s coverage of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest final at Fornebu on  29 May will now not be affected.
