The people behind the oldest profession in the world are about to receive a rude shock. In an effort to stamp out human trafficking in Bergen, the police are to place some of their own out on the streets in a different uniform.

Neighbourhood secrets

Police in Bergen would like to rid the city of the sex trade and are now asking for information and assistance from members of the public, according to Bergens Tidende.

“We don’t normally have access to information about who buys sex, who’s behind it, or who runs the activity on the streets,” says Are Sangolt of the Bergen police.

According to the paper C. Sundtsagte and Strandkaien in the centre of town are two of the most popular places for prostitutes to stand, and police started distributing leaflets to residents yesterday.

“We want to know what people who live in the area know,” he says.

“Have you got the time?”

And as another part of the operation, it’s reported that they’re also considering sending (not so) plain-clothed police out on the streets to pose as prostitutes.

“I’m not discounting that it’s a good idea,” says Sangolt.

Amongst other things, Sangolt says he’s interested in pictures and license-plate numbers, but asks people not to go amok.
