Meeting

“We are discussing proposed job reductions at our Bergen site with employee representatives”, a Rolls-Royce spokesperson told The Foreigner in an email.

According to NA24, the employees were informed of the news at a general meeting this morning.

“We have been aware as to which way their decision would go for some time”, said Cathrine Ulvøy, the workers’ union representative to BT.no.

Financial climate

Ellen Kvalsund, head of communications at Rolls-Royce, told Bergens Tidende (BT.no) that

“the market situation has become so difficult that we see no other option than giving them their notice.”

The marine-engine factory in Bergen is just part of an ongoing plan to cut costs due to the impact of economic uncertainty worldwide.

The numbers

According to Kvalsund, up to 180 employees in the engine-division will have to go, whilst 30 will lose their jobs at the foundry.

“We will aim to achieve as many of these reductions as possible by natural attrition or redeployment elsewhere within the Group”, the email from the Rolls-Royce spokesperson states.
